40 Million for 2011!

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

Well, I guess Apple achieved that crazy-sounding 40 million total for 2011; the last quarter sold an incredible 15.43 million iPads, added to the earlier quarters of 4.69, 9.25 and 11.12! Apple clearly still offer the best tablet computer, even with the launch of the Amazon Kindle Fire late last year – no news yet [...]

Apple service, nothing better!

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

Last week, on vacation, I discovered that my iPad 2 was not recording sound; I tried recording some sounds and just got static; I then tried the Skype Test Call service and that also was silent. Tonight I booked and visited the Genius Bar at my local Apple store. The “genius” tried to record using [...]

40 million, here it comes?!

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

Last quarter, Apple sold just less than 10 million iPads, leaving me still doubting they could sell 40 million for the year as predicted back in January. Of course that same prediction was for a higher resolution iPad 2 display, which didn’t happen. But now, the latest quarterly figures from Apple announce sales of more [...]

Zite highlights Steve Jobs tributes on his “magic” iPad tonight …

Record iPad sales

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

Apple’s latest quarterly announcement revealed sales of more than 9 million iPads in the last three months: Apple sold 9.25 million iPads during the quarter, a 183 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter Amazing! But I still doubt they can reach 40 million for the year … of course that article was wrong about [...]

25 Million iPads

Monday, June 6th, 2011

From the ongoing WWDC … Apple has so far sold 200 million iOS devices, with more than 25 million of those being iPads:

iPad 2 to DVI TV

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

I just bought the Apple Digital AV Adapter and was able to test it out today connected to an HD TV … even with a lowly 768KB internet feed, we were successfully able to watch Formula One streamed from our DISH Network receiver back home, and Red Dwarf on Netflix! It seems that the DVI [...]

“Only” 4.69 million iPads

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

From Apple PR: The Company also sold 4.69 million iPads during the quarter Low sales compared with previously; but close to 20 million total now.

Rotation lock returns!

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

Today iOS 4.3 has been released by Apple, and one benefit is the option to restore the original rotation lock function of the side switch, finally!

iPad 2 wishlist

Monday, February 28th, 2011

This MacWorld article”Eleven things we’d like to see in the next iPad” is worth reading, prior to Wednesday’s no-doubt-iPad-2 announcements from Apple … Personally, I expect to see the next iPad to have both front and rear cameras, and a little less weight; like the iPhone 4 it will surely also have a faster processor [...]

Almost fifteen million iPads!

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

With Today’s announcement of 7.33 million iPads sold, adding to the 4.19 and 3.27 in the previous quarters where iPads could be bought, Apple is close to 15 million – and there’s still 10 weeks till it’s been available for a full year. Simply astounding … Amusing now to Google for predictions made a year [...]

Printing with iOS 4.2

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

While AirPrint might be available one day, right now it’s missing. I’d already found that my HP printer is not new enough for the iPad to recognize it, though it works fine with various iPad printing Apps; so I’d hoped that it would be possible to print via my iMac, but last nights 10.6.5 update [...]

Pandora, backgrounded

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

With iOS 4.2 on iPad, we can finally play Pandora “custom radio station” music in the background. A nice trick is that you can double tap the home button to access play controls (and the sadly stolen-from-switch rotation lock setting), without exiting any running App – it just slides up out of the way temporarily [...]

iOS 4.2 first thoughts

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

After a few hours, I’ve been able to get iOS 4.2 on to my iPad – some effort is needed to find a useable torrent for iPad1,1_4.2_8C134_Restore.ipsw, and also to download iTunes 10.1 beta (without iTunes 10.1, you will get an iOS 4.2 iPad which cannot be used!) First thoughts … folders are finally available! [...]

7-1/2 million

Monday, October 18th, 2010

With the latest quarterly announcement, Apple indicate that they’ve now sold almost 7-1/2 million iPads (4.19 million on top of the 3.27 million in the first quarter of iPad availability); though perhaps that is a slight slowdown in sales, since many more countries carry the iPad in the newer quarter. Of course that number is [...]

iOS 4.2 preview

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Check out The Engadget preview of iOS 4.2 on the iPad, showing folders and discussing other enhancements like multi-tasking And AirPrint … The addition of multitasking, folders, and big improvements in mail (amongst other things) finally make the device feel more like a computer and less like a gigantic iPhone … we’re impressed to see [...]

No folders till November!

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

A bit annoyed that Apple are delaying iOS4 for the iPad till November, even if it will include printing when it finally arrives – and of course November could mean the 30th, which is December really. …Apple has announced that iOS 4.2 for the iPad will be available in November when it is also released [...]

“Too Hot” lawsuit

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

I have seen my iPad shut down in Sunny weather, and now there’s a lawsuit: A trio of California consumers claims the iPad overheats and shuts down within minutes of coming into contact with direct sunlight, rendering it virtually useless in outdoor environments Of course like most lawsuits this one exaggerates the issue – but [...]

iPad V3.2.1

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

Apple released a software update for the iPad this week, taking the version to V3.2.1; it’s still unfortunately only possible to update your iPad using iTunes on a PC or Mac … This is a minor upgrade, claiming to address WiFi connectivity issues – but my wife’s iPad continues to erratically connect sometimes; I suspect [...]

No benefit from Retina Display

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

With the new iPhone 4 “Retina Display” showing almost the same resolution as iPad (960×640 compared with 1024×768), I had a hope that running iPhone Apps on the iPad would replace the 2x scaling with some sort of “display at retina resolution” that would give the same screen coverage, but with no pixel-doubling. Sadly, that’s [...]

Upgrading to 3G

Monday, June 7th, 2010

I have plans to drive coast-to-coast in August, and I’d like to be able to use my iPad on the road, including navigation features – so I finally convinced myself to upgrade to a 3G iPad; and by luck I was able to get one today from my local Apple store! Moving from one iPad [...]

3G usage

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Beware AT&T’s new data rate plans, coming next week: (image from TUAW) Just a short couple of months ago, Apple announced amazing 3G data plans for the iPad: Now, AT&T are about to eliminate the unlimited option – I do think that “bait & switch” is the correct term here, with blame falling on Apple [...]

The iPad begat the iPhone

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

I’m not sure how much the “concept tablet” would have been like today’s iPad, if the iPhone hadn’t already existed (the App store, for example, is critical to the success of the iPad) – but it’s interesting to read Steve Job’s comments: “I’ll tell you a secret. It actually started with the tablet first,” Jobs [...]

Two million iPads!

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Two million iPad sales in two months, quite impressive! Visit Apple’s PR pages for the full article

Camera Connection Kit

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

I finally received my camera connection kit today, and immediately set about testing it for it’s “official” purpose of getting photos in to the camera … Problem #1, the SD connector doesn’t fit nicely with the iPad case – maybe my iPad case is poorly cut, but the SD connector is a tiny bit wider [...]

iPad delays

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Citing “heavy demand and swift sales after its launch in the United States“, Apple has announced that international availability of the iPad will be delayed another month, to the end of May! Visit Reuters for the full story.

Apple’s iPad case

Monday, April 12th, 2010

I’d planned to write some comments about the Apple iPad case, but happily Erica Sadun at TUAW has written almost the exact same thoughts … For US$39, I really thought Apple would deliver a protective case that perfectly augmented the iPad using experience … I hate the hard edges … I hate the folding bit [...]

iPhone OS 4

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Honestly, the iPad should have shipped with some of the announced-today features of OS 4; but at least you can watch the presentation on your iPad, to see what you’re missing (till “Fall 2010″, anyway) … I didn’t see any mention of a way to fit more App icons on the iPad screen, either! Click [...]
